Solar resilience: Mitigating risks to PV installations posed by extreme weather

In this pv magazine Webinar, we will explore how resistance to extreme weather can be manufactured into modules and trackers for the utility-scale segments. As the frequency of extreme weather events increases, we’ll examine the solar technology that can mitigate risk from hail damage, high winds, and uneven snow loading.

Hail is responsible for more than half the dollar losses in US solar insurance claims despite accounting for just 2% of claims. The significant damage that extreme weather can inflict on a PV modules and structures, combined with the long-term nature of PV investment, means resistance to hail, snow and wind are key to maximizing returns.

In this pv magazine Webinar, we’ll be joined by Trinasolar, as well as experts from CPP Wind, a leader in wind engineering and tunnel testing, and RETC, which has been pioneering hail impact testing and solar risk assessment. We’ll discuss the science behind the weather risks facing solar installations as well as how Trinasolar’s newly integrated solution -combining weather-resistant modules and a smart tracking system- works together to shield installations from damage.

Heather Sauder from CPP Wind will provide an overview of the hidden dangers of strong winds and how testing can prevent failures; Cherif Kedir from RETC will dive into the detail of hail risk to PV modules as well as sharing analysis of how Trinasolar’s weather resistant module performed in RETC’s hail testing; and Rocky Li from Trinasolar will explain how the company has built its engineered solutions with resistance to extreme weather in mind.
